Trump administration probes California sex education materials, sparking controversy over LGBTQ+ content

The Trump administration has initiated a review of California's sex education curriculum, examining its "medical accuracy" and age-appropriateness. The investigation, led by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has sparked heated debate, particularly concerning the inclusion of LGBTQ+ issues. Advocates for LGBTQ+ rights are raising alarms, claiming that the review is an attempt to censor crucial information about queer and transgender sexual health.

The inquiry, which began in late March 2025, is centered on California's Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP), a federally funded initiative that provides sex education to youth aged 10 to 19. The review demands that the state submit all educational materials related to PREP to the ACF, which provides $75 million in annual funding for such programs across the country. As reported by Los Angeles Times, California's Department of Public Health has stated that PREP aims to prevent adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections while promoting healthy relationships.

California's PREP program under federal scrutiny
The federal investigation has drawn attention due to its potential impact on LGBTQ+ inclusive content in sex education. The PREP curriculum, designed to serve vulnerable youth—including those who are low-income, homeless, in foster care, or identify as LGBTQ+—has faced criticism from conservative groups. The ACF's acting assistant secretary, Andrew Gradison, emphasized the need for "age-appropriate" and "medically accurate" education, as reported by Los Angeles Times.

However, advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, such as Jorge Reyes Salinas, spokesperson for Equality California, have expressed concerns that the review is politically motivated. Salinas accused the Trump administration of using the investigation as a thinly veiled effort to "erase mentions of the transgender community, transgender healthcare, and different gender identities and pronouns."
