NEW DELHI: Teacher's Day is celebrated on September 5 every year throughout India in memory of
Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan
on his birthday.
On the birth anniversary of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the governemnt of India give away the prizes to the students who are doing good in the field of education.

He was born in a Telugu-speaking family and received his surname from his forefathers who were from Sarvepalli village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
He has played many roles in his life. He has been a teacher, philosopher author and politician. He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.

Radhakrishnan was awarded knighthood in 1931. In 1954, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He got honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
Why September 5 is celebrated as Teachers DayAfter Dr. Radhakrishnan became second President of India, some of his former students came to him and sought his permission to celebrate his birthday on September 5.
Dr. Radhakrishnan politely declined their request and suggested them that instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be his proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day.
Since then his birthday is being celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.
