School holiday on 4 September 2025: Rain, floods and festivals lead to closures across India

Schools across multiple Indian states remain closed on September 4, 2025, due to continuous rain, flooding, and regional festivals. Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Haryana, Mathura, and Uttarakhand have extended school holidays for safety. The IMD has issued red and orange alerts in several districts. In addition, ICAI has postponed CA exams in affected regions. Festivals like Onam, Id-e-Milad, and Ganesh Visarjan have also contributed to school closures in different states.

NEW DELHI: Amid heavy rainfall and flooding in several regions of India, multiple state governments have declared school holidays on September 4, 2025. The ongoing monsoon, coupled with scheduled regional festivals, has led to an extended break for students in various states.Several areas have been placed under red and orange alerts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), prompting precautionary closures of educational institutions. Additionally, festivals such as Onam, Id-e-Milad, and Teacher’s Day are coinciding with the weather-related holidays.

Schools closed due to rain and floodingIn Punjab, the state government has extended school holidays due to continued heavy rainfall and flooding. The closure now remains in effect till September 7, 2025, for all Government, Aided, Recognised, Private Schools, Colleges, Universities, and Polytechnics across the state. Earlier, schools were closed till September 3, 2025, but the worsening weather conditions have led to further extension.
Himachal Pradesh has also extended holidays for schools and educational institutions till September 7, 2025, due to incessant rain causing flash floods and landslides.
A red alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu districts, while orange alerts are active in Shimla, Solan, Sirmour, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti.

In the Jammu Division, schools have been ordered to remain closed till September 5, 2025. The region has been experiencing heavy rainfall, waterlogging, and landslides. The rising water levels in rivers such as the Jhelum, Chenab, and Tawi have further intensified the situation.

In Haryana, schools in Ambala and Jhajjar districts will remain closed till September 5, 2025. In Jhajjar, the District Disaster Management Authority has extended closures for all Government, Private Schools, and Anganwadi Centres till September 6, 2025, due to the IMD forecast of heavy rainfall. However, school staff are required to remain on duty.

Flood situation in Mathura and school holiday declarationIn Mathura district, a flood-like situation has arisen due to a sharp rise in the Yamuna River. As a result, the District Basic Education Officer has declared school holidays up to Class 12 for September 3 and 4, 2025. CA exams postponed by ICAIThe Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has postponed the CA Final and Intermediate exams scheduled for September 3 and 4, 2025 in various centres across Punjab and Jammu.
