Purdue University to make AI competency mandatory for all undergraduates starting 2026
Purdue University is taking a bold step to prepare its students for a future increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). Starting with freshmen entering in 2026, all undergraduate students at the university will be required to demonstrate basic AI competency, according to a report by Forbes. The move is part of the university’s broader AI@Purdue strategy, which aims to integrate AI across learning, research, and industry collaboration.

AI@Purdue: A campus-wide initiative
The new “AI working competency” requirement was approved by Purdue’s Board of Trustees on December 12. Purdue President Mung Chiang noted that AI’s rapid impact on society and higher education makes it essential for the university to “lean in and lean forward” across multiple functions. The initiative is embedded within Purdue’s broader Purdue Computes strategic plan and will continue to evolve to meet academic and societal needs.Tailored competency for every program
Unlike a standard, one-size-fits-all requirement, the AI competency will be integrated into existing programs without adding extra credit hours. The provost, in collaboration with college deans, will establish discipline-specific criteria and proficiency standards. Students will demonstrate their AI skills through projects aligned with the goals of their individual programs. Some AI resources will also be made available to current students starting from the spring semester, even though the mandate officially begins for the 2026 batch.Preparing students for the AI-driven workforce
According to Forbes, Purdue aims to ensure that graduates:- Can effectively understand and use AI tools in their chosen fields, recognizing their strengths and limitations.
- Are able to communicate decisions informed by AI, while understanding AI’s broader influence on society.
- Can adapt to and collaborate with future AI developments in the workforce.
Purdue’s growing AI ecosystem
Purdue already offers BA and BS degrees in AI, as well as a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. The university has expanded research across sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and health sciences. Faculty and staff are equipped with AI tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, while partnerships with Google and Apple— including a new Spatial Computing Hub— strengthen the university’s AI infrastructure. The shift in higher education
As Forbes notes, the focus of universities is rapidly shifting from policing AI use to actively preparing students for a workforce transformed by AI. Colleges are introducing new AI majors and minors, establishing interdisciplinary research centres, and encouraging students to use AI tools to advance knowledge in diverse fields. Purdue’s move signals a broader trend in higher education: equipping graduates not just to navigate the AI era, but to thrive in it.Ready to navigate global policies? Secure your overseas future.
