Manipur schools closed due to recent surge in violence
Manipur has recently witnessed an escalation in violence, with a deadly rocket attack on September 6 claiming one life. This incident is part of a series of clashes and security threats that have plagued the region. Earlier, schools were closed until September 7 following bomb attacks in the Bishnupur district, where a blast killed an elderly man and injured five others in Moirang.
The violence intensified on September 7, 2024, with five fatalities reported in Jiribam district. Security forces responded to these incidents by destroying three militant bunkers in the Churachandpur district after rocket attacks were launched in Bishnupur. Since May of the previous year, ethnic violence between the Meitei community in Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills has resulted in over 200 deaths and left thousands homeless.
The recent decision to close schools underscores the state government's concern for the safety of its citizens amid ongoing drone and gun attacks, which have resulted in numerous casualties and injuries.
