Madhya Pradesh extends Teachers' summer break amid heatwave; schools to reopen on June 16
The Madhya Pradesh government has extended the summer vacation for teachers by seven days as several districts continue to experience extreme heat. Schools across the state will reopen on June 16 as scheduled, but teachers will now report to duty from June 7 instead of June 1.
The decision was announced by the School Education Department of Madhya Pradesh. The department said the extension was granted in view of the prevailing weather conditions and concerns over the health of teachers.
Sharing the notification on its official X handle, the department said, "the state is currently experiencing extreme heat and heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in many districts. Teachers are also carrying out work related to the census and board examinations during the summer."
According to the department, many parts of the state are recording temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. Authorities said the extension was necessary as teachers are also engaged in census-related duties and board examination work during the vacation period.
As per the revised schedule, the summer vacation for teachers will now continue from May 1 to June 7, 2026. Earlier, teachers were expected to return to schools on June 1.
The state government said the decision was taken after considering both the ongoing heatwave and the workload being handled by teachers during the summer break. Schools, however, will reopen for students on June 16.
