More than 23 lakh students appeared for NEET 2024, validating the high demand for this profession. Well, it doesn’t need to be reiterated that medicine is one of the most sought-after professions in India and worldwide, for more reasons than one. Apart from the opportunity to save lives, a career in this field is highly rewarding.

However, the pay grade of doctors varies depending on multiple factors including location. There are some countries that pay immensely well to their medical practitioners.

According to the 2024 reports released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Luxembourg tops the list of high paying countries for doctors. Check out the list of top 7 countries that offer the best salary packages to our life savers.

​Luxembourg

This European country has topped the list as the highest payer for doctors. specialists can earn up to ₹26,292,200. The General Practitioners in Luxembourg can receive a pay of around ₹ 20,769,800 per year. Estimates of the Economic Research Institute also suggest that the average hourly salary of doctors in Luxembourg is approximately €118 (10,718.65 INR).

Practising as a general practitioner in Luxembourg requires the candidates to obtain a certification issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Security alongside other qualifications. They must fulfill the physical and mental health and ethics-related requirements as well.

​United States

Specialists in the US can earn up to ₹ 24, 428, 200 per year. The general practitioners can receive up to ₹22, 228,600 per annum. The salaries are dependent on various factors, such as their expertise, demand, location, education, years of experience, etc.

Interestingly, the Bureau of Labour Statistics report suggests that in the list of the top 20 highest-paying professions in the US, 19 are related to healthcare services.

The Netherlands is renowned for facilitating doctors with high compensation and a favourable work environment. In addition to this, the medical practitioners in this country receive numerous other benefits. General practitioners can earn up to ₹ 8,709,000 and specialists can earn up to ₹ 8,709,000 per year.

Australia is renowned for providing a rewarding compensation package along with a decent work-life balance. The specialists can earn up to ₹ 18,399, 800 annually, and the general practitioners can earn up to ₹ 6,760,200 annually.

This country provides a sophisticated healthcare infrastructure, along with various promising opportunities, attracting aspiring doctors to practise there.

The approximate salary of the specialists in Germany can be approximately ₹ 16, 501,400 annually. The compensation for general practitioners is approximately in the range of ₹ 15,920,600 annually. Germany is known to offer a very good work-life balance to doctors. The German healthcare system is highly structured and provides optimum support to medical practitioners.

Special practitioners can earn up to INR 16,000,00 per annum, and general practitioners can receive compensation of up to 10,500,000 per year. According to the new working hour policy introduced in Austria on the basis of European Directive 2003/88/EG, it has restricted the on-duty working hours of medical practitioners to about 48 hours per week.

Specialists in Belgium can earn up to INR 14,000,000 and approximately 4,500,000 per annum if they are general practitioners. Belgium is known for having one of the most advanced healthcare systems in Europe, validated by its ranking at ninth position out of 89 countries in the 2019 Health Care Index. Medical practitioners in Belgium work for approximately 51 hours per week.
