None of the state universities or colleges from Bihar have made it to the list of top 100 institutions.

Indian Institute of Technology

, Patna (IIT Patna) and NIT Patna are the only two institutes from the state to feature in the rankings.

While IIT Patna, ranked 54th in the overall list and 26th among the top 100 engineering colleges, NIT Patna secured 92nd position in the list of top 100 engineering colleges.

The unflattering results at NIRF has highlighted the challenges faced by HEIs in the state. Pointing at the reason for this let down, Dolly Sinha, pro-vice-chancellor of Patna University says that most of the universities including Patna University did not apply for the NIRF as they lack significantly in research, which is a major parameter basis which the institutes are awarded the rankings. “Absence of new-age courses, poor infrastructure among other reasons also refrained universities from participating in the ranking this year,” she adds.

Similar to last year,

IIT Madras

emerged as the best institution in the country this year. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and IIT Delhi stood at second and third ranks, respectively. A total of 5800 institutions have been ranked in the 2020 rankings.
