KU, PAU alumnus part of food programme team that received Nobel Peace Prize 2020
KURUKSHETRA: Bishow Parajuli, one of Kurukshetra University's (KU) most illustrious alumni has been an important part of UN’s (United Nations) World Food Programme (WFP) team which is awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2020.
KU working ad-hoc vice chancellor (VC) Nita Khanna congratulated Bishow and the varsity’s School of Management for the notable achievement.
Parajuli, an alumnus of 1979-81 batch from KU School of Management (formerly Department of Management), is presently working as UNs WFP representative and country director to India.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee had decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the WFP for its effort to combat hunger.
Parajuli took office as UNs WFP representative and country director to India on September 1, 2019, and he has 35 years of distinguished experiences in development, humanitarian affairs, diplomacy, fundraising, and management in over 10 countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, including WFP headquarters in Rome.
KU School of Management congratulated its proud alumnus for his contribution along with this team in executing WFP role in securing multilateral cooperation on making food security an instrument of peace and has made a strong contribution towards mobilizing the UN member states to combat the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, the varsity officials said.
Earlier, Parajuli did his BSc in Agriculture, Agriculture Operations and Related Sciences from Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana.
Parajuli also did master’s degree in Rural Development from Imperial College, London.
As per the information, in the most recent contribution as UN WFP representative, Parajuli signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government’s state rural livelihood mission (SRLM) to benefit about 200 women self-help groups by involving them in manufacturing of Take-Home Rations kits, which are distributed to children aged 6 to 36 months and pregnant and lactating mothers across the states and Union Territories of India.
