India Post GDS selection process: How age and Class 10 marks decide who gets selected

The Gramin Dak Seva (GDS) hiring for the Department of Posts is underway. The recruitment will fill thousands of positions at the grassroots level that make up the rural postal network in India. The applications are received via the formal GDS web portal, and the selection will be done through merit without any written exam. The recruitment drive aims to fill 28,740 vacancies. The application process started on January 31 and will close on February 14, 2026. The registration fees can be paid up to February 16, 2026.

As stated in the official notification, shortlisting is done on the basis of marks acquired in the Secondary School Examination (Class 10) undertaken through recognised boards. The merit list is made by computing the marks or grades as a percentage, and with proper calculation up to a decimal point of four.

Calculation of merit in the Indian post GDS selection.

India Post Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment is conducted with the help of an automated system, which is completely based on the performance of the candidate in the Class 10 Secondary School Examination. There is no written test or interview, and the higher academic qualifications are not taken into account at any given point in the selection process.

The marks gained in Class 10 are then changed to a percentage, which is computed to a precision of up to four decimal places. The marks mentioned in the marksheet, under subject-wise, are directly taken to calculate merit. In case a marksheet has grades or grade points rather than marks, India Post then transforms the grades into marks by multiplying them by a constant multiplication factor of 9.5. The changed marks are normalised into a maximum mark of 100.

Applicants will be asked to provide academic information as presented in their marksheets. In case there are marks that are availed and grades are given in place, then the application can be cancelled. But in case grades are provided in selected subjects, candidates can provide grades in such subjects without conversion on their part.

Each postal circle has its own merit list drawn up, and the applicants are ranked purely on the result of the percentage obtained.

How ties are solved in the GDS merit list?

In case of a tie between two or more candidates having the same percentage in the merit list, the India Post uses a pre-established tie-breaking policy. The initial category of resolution is age, whereby older candidates will be preferred.

In case the tie is not settled, the selection is made on the grounds of some predetermined priorities in order of category and gender identity.
