For students who dream of working in aviation or space technology but were held back by the IIT-JEE barrier, IIT Madras has a new answer. The institute has introduced an online BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology that does away with the JEE requirement, offering a flexible pathway into one of India’s most strategic and fast-growing engineering domains. The flexible, skill-based degree is aimed at students and working professionals who want industry-relevant aerospace training without the constraints of traditional entrance exams or on-campus study.Expanding Access to Aerospace EducationThe programme is aligned with the nation's priorities of aircraft and aviation, drone systems, and space manufacturing. Those who have completed Class 12 or are diploma holders can avail this programme even without the IIT, JEE examination. Moreover, referring to the National Education Policy, the programme offers various exit options in the form of a foundation, diploma, or bachelor's degree in science.
The flexible structure permits all students to study at their own pace, with examinations scheduled to take place on Sundays, accommodating working professionals and students from different backgrounds.
Industry Aligned Curriculum and Learning ModelThe curriculum is organized around the idea that students should first establish strong basics in areas such as analysis, design, industrial research and development, and postgraduate studies. Students would get acquainted with the use of tools and methods such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Methods (FEM), and aircraft/spacecraft design.
Classes will be a combination of watching recorded lectures, attending live tutorials and getting involved in interactive discussion forums. Laboratory courses will also be held at IIT Madras campus for practical work, thus bridging the gap between online learning and practical application.
Career Pathways and Financial SupportThe Programme's alumni will be in an excellent position to pursue careers in aerospace, defence, energy, and advanced engineering sectors. The degree also provides a strong foundation for competitive examinations such as GATE and for pursuing advanced degrees in India and abroad.
The internship and placement will be facilitated by the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE), IIT Madras, which will strengthen links with industry and research organisations. To encourage inclusiveness, the institute is providing fee-waivers to the extent of 75 per cent for the eligible learners.
This launch further demonstrates the commitment of IIT Madras to democratizing world-class technical education and to attend to the emerging needs of the aerospace and space technology ecosystem in India.
