Who is JD Vance?

If you have an eye for international politics, then the name of JD Vance isn’t unknown to you. This senator from Ohio has recently hogged the limelight after being selected by Donald Trump for the role of Vice President in the upcoming presidential election. Vance, 39, gained national recognition with the release of his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy in 2016, when Donald Trump was preparing for his first term in the White House.

In 2022, he was elected to the Senate and emerged as one of the most ardent supporters of the former president’s ‘Make America Great Again’ agenda.

J.D. Vance has had a diverse career path. Before pursuing higher education, Vance served in the Marines for four years and completed a tour of duty in Iraq. Hillbilly Elegy: What’s in it for learners?

Hillbilly Elegy is J.D. Vance’s memoir. It tells the tale of a childhood plagued by abuse, alcoholism, and poverty. Vance’s personal account is the story of the struggles faced by his family and community which follows his journey from a troubled childhood to his service in the Marine Corps, his education at Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and his career in Silicon Valley.

However, Hillbilly Elegy is more than just a memoir of a troubled childhood and a tale of overcoming adversity. It is a rich source of inspiration and learning for students. Through his personal narrative, Vance imparts lessons on various aspects of life, starting from the power of self reliance to financial management. Here are the key learnings for students.

5/10

Education has transformative power

One of the central themes in Hillbilly Elegy is the transformative power of education. Vance describes how his time in the Marine Corps and later at Ohio State University and Yale Law School opened doors he never thought possible.

He writes, “If you want to escape, it's not enough just to leave. You have to understand what you're leaving, and where you're going to.” Education was Vance’s escape route from a cycle of poverty and dysfunction, and students can learn the value of perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge.

6/10

Resilience is the key to survival

Vance's story is a testament to resilience. Growing up in a chaotic household with a revolving door of father figures and a mother battling addiction, Vance faced numerous obstacles throughout his growing up years. Yet, he consistently found ways to overcome them.

He writes, “Whenever people ask me what I'd most like them to know about my life, I tell them about the violence.” His ability to withstand and rise above these challenges offers a powerful lesson in resilience. His memoir also highlights the need to address such issues in society.

7/10

Family support is important

Despite the turmoil, Vance's grandparents played a pivotal role in his upbringing, providing stability and support. His ‘Mamaw’ was particularly influential, instilling in him the values of hard work and determination. Vance recalls, “Mamaw never left me any doubt that she loved me or that my future was in my hands.”

His writings underscore the importance of having a supportive network, be it family or friends.

8/10

Appreciating one’s cultural heritage is essential

“To understand me, you have to understand that I am a Scots-Irish hillbilly at heart,” writes Vance. Hillbilly Elegy delves deep into the cultural identity of the Appalachian community. Vance’s reflection on his roots helps readers understand the significance of cultural heritage and its impact on personal identity.

It will encourage students to explore and appreciate their own backgrounds and help them shape their perspectives and values.

9/10

Self-reliance is the best policy

While Vance acknowledges the external factors that contribute to poverty and despair, he also emphasizes personal responsibility. He describes how he had to make conscious choices to break free from his circumstances.

Vance notes, “You can’t always count on the people around you, but you can count on yourself.” This perspective will nudge students to take control of their own destiny.

10/10

Do not live beyond your means

One of the most striking lines from Vance’s memoir is, “We spend our way into the poorhouse and wonder why we’re living paycheck to paycheck.” This highlights a critical issue many face: poor financial management and the lack of long-term planning.

Vance's experiences illustrate how living beyond one’s means can lead to financial instability and stress. For students, this serves as a reminder of the importance of budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions.
