First IIT campus to be launched in Nigeria: How India is expanding its global education footprint under NEP 2020
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are going global, with Nigeria soon to host the first IIT campus in West Africa. This initiative marks a major step in India’s global education outreach and is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages Indian universities to expand internationally.
The plan was confirmed by Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with the Indian High Commission in Abuja, highlighting the commitment of both countries to strengthen collaboration in science, technology, and innovation education.
India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, confirmed that the campus will follow the model of the IIT Madras–Zanzibar campus. India will provide teachers, courses, and training, while Nigeria will provide buildings and local support. A team from both countries will plan the campus, hire teachers, and prepare the courses. The first students are expected in 2026.
The campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in engineering, technology, and research. Students will also have chances to work on research projects, connect with industries, and try out new ideas through start-up programs.
As per various media reports, India is also looking at potential IIT campuses in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the UK. These campuses aim to share India’s experience in science and technology and build long-term partnerships with other countries.
Marking the fifth anniversary of NEP earlier this year, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said India’s goal is to share its strengths with other countries while also welcoming international students and researchers. IIT campuses abroad are a clear example of this plan in action.
For India, the campus strengthens ties with Nigeria and other countries, allows teachers and researchers to work together, and shows India’s education system to the world. India is no longer only sending students abroad; it is creating campuses that make a lasting impact.
The campus reflects NEP 2020’s goal of making India a globally connected education leader. By sharing knowledge, training students, and supporting innovation, India is taking steps toward a global education network—one campus, one country, and one student at a time.Ready to navigate global policies? Indo-Nigerian education ties to strengthen
The IIT Nigeria campus will be at the Federal Government Academy (FGA) in Suleja, also called the Nigerian Academy for the Gifted. This place was chosen because it already has strong academics and could become a center for science and technology in Africa. The official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Nigerian Ministry of Education confirmed that the academy will be upgraded into a center of excellence with help from Indian experts.India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, confirmed that the campus will follow the model of the IIT Madras–Zanzibar campus. The first students are expected in 2026.
Part of a bigger global plan
IIT Nigeria is part of India’s effort to open campuses abroad. The IIT Madras–Zanzibar campus started in 2023 with students from across Africa. The IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi campus, which opened in 2024, offers courses that match local industry needs. As per various media reports, India is also looking at potential IIT campuses in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the UK. These campuses aim to share India’s experience in science and technology and build long-term partnerships with other countries.
How NEP 2020 helps
The National Education Policy 2020 supports this plan. NEP encourages Indian universities to open campuses in other countries and allows top foreign universities to open campuses in India. It also supports research collaborations, joint programs, and teacher exchanges so knowledge and skills can move both ways.Marking the fifth anniversary of NEP earlier this year, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said India’s goal is to share its strengths with other countries while also welcoming international students and researchers. IIT campuses abroad are a clear example of this plan in action.
What this means for India and Nigeria
For Nigeria, IIT Nigeria will give students access to quality education in science, technology, and engineering. They will also get hands-on experience through research projects, industry partnerships, and start-up programs. This will help build local skills and support the country’s growth in technology and industry. For India, the campus strengthens ties with Nigeria and other countries, allows teachers and researchers to work together, and shows India’s education system to the world.
