Farmer’s 3 daughters now join 2 elder sisters in Raj civil service

JAIPUR: Three sisters born to a school dropout father and an unlettered mother have cracked the

Rajasthan Administrative Service

(RAS) examination with top-100 ranks, following in the footsteps of two elder siblings who had blazed the trail a few years ago.


The five daughters of farmer Sahadev Saharan and Lakshmi –

Roma

,

Manju

, Anshu,

Ritu

and Suman – were mostly homeschooled in their native village of Bhairusari in Hanumangarh district because their father couldn’t afford to send them to a high school located far from where they lived.

The sisters appeared for their board exams from open school and studied privately for graduation to Ph.D. before taking a shot at the state civil service. Anshu, Ritu, and Suman secured the 31st, 96th, and 98th positions respectively among over 2,000 selected candidates in the highly competitive exam. Roma is a block development officer while Manju works in the cooperative department as part of the RAS allied services.

Mohanlal Saharan

, an uncle of the sisters, said the family couldn’t be prouder at what they had achieved in the face of multiple hurdles. “With sheer dedication, our daughters didn’t let the lack of facilities stop them. My brother, although not a highly educated person, backed his children to the hilt and helped them in whatever way he could, financially or emotionally.”

For the village, the Saharan sisters are not just role models but also achievers who have shown the way to anyone in the village fearful of dreaming. Their only brother — and the family’s youngest — has just graduated from

NIT Hamirpur

and is preparing for the civil services.
