The quality and shortage of teaching staff has always been a serious concern for the elementary education system in India. Now, a focus on practical training of teachers is being considered as a solution. Therefore, the Central Institute of Education (CIE) has decided to train future teachers in their future workplaces. Students, who are undergoing training for the BEd programme from CIE, will receive practical training in municipal corporation schools.
The institute also plans to increase the duration of the programme to two years, wherein the additional year will be marked for practical training in government schools.
According to Bharati Baveja, head, CIE, the institute has shared its plans with the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and Delhi's Municipal Corporation authorities and the schedules will soon be finalised. "We met with different schools and a roadmap will be drawn soon to incorporate the students into the school's schedules," informed Baveja. Colleges running the programme have undertaken projects and conducted workshops for students, teachers and teacher educators of elementary education. "Colleges such as Gargi and the Institute of Home Economics have participated in a collaborative project titled 'University-School Resource Network (USRN)' with JNU and Delhi University," stated Rama Mathew, professor, CIE.
