MBA programmes in the areas of ''International Business'' and ''Human Resource and Organisational Development'' from the house of Delhi School of Economics (DSE) seems interesting when you consider the school is more famous for producing economists.
The ''Master''s in International Business'' or MIB and ''Master''s in Human Resource and Organisational Development'' or MHROD programmes offered at the department of commerce in the DSE aim at developing leaders, architects and organisational builders to compete at a global level.
But, how different are these programmes from similar courses offered by B-schools across the country. The head of department of commerce at the DSE Sri Ram Khanna said: "The MIB and MHROD are specialised courses, the former dealing with the fundamentals and operations of international business and commerce, and the latter with intricacies of managing the human resources and all-round development of an organisation.
"Most institutes offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management or MBA which have a definite tilt towards domestic markets. Our MIB programme aims at developing professionals who can provide solutions to problems in emerging open economies of the world, and of organisations involved in international business. The MHROD programme, on the other hand, was designed with a view to provide a highly skilled task force which can mould an organisation''s human resources to make it competitive in these open markets."
The curricula of these two programmes have been designed to enhance the acquired expertise of students, focusing on decision-making and analytical skills in addition to communication skills. "The theoretical aspect is supervised by our core faculty, who are ably supported by visiting faculty from institutions like Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Faculty of Management Studies and All-India Management Association. Lectures, case studies and group activities are efficiently employed to build upon the knowledge base of the students," added Khanna.
To acquaint students with the practical aspects of management, in addition to the summer internship, there are other events like port visits and symposia besides regular seminars, guest lectures, panel discussions, workshops and industrial visits. There is an annual convention, organised on a large scale, to provide a platform to discuss contemporary issues. This acts as an interface with the industry too. "A unique feature about our programmes at is that almost all activities cited are organised and managed by our student bodies. This gives the students real-time experience of imminent issues once they turn professionals," exclaimed Khanna.

With industry being the end-user of graduates, the faculty constantly updates itself with the latest innovations in all relevant fields. "In June this year, the curriculums of both the courses were upgraded after an in-depth external review. Our interaction with key individuals of the corporate segment helps us in understanding market needs more effectively. As students can best understand the interests and capabilities of their peers, training and placement cells act efficiently in placing the students in organisations of their choice. There is an annual convention and other such similar events too to provide a platform for interaction with the industry," remarked Khanna.
An institute offering MBA programmes is known for its students and placements. Where does DSE''s two programmes position itself in future? "We receive, on an average, 12,000 applications for our courses and only 40 students each are admitted. This ensures that only the best get into our institute. By the time, the students of our MIB and MHROD programmes complete their two years of stay here, they are acclimatised to a rigorous regime which prepares them well for their entry into the industry. Placements have been 100 per cent in the last few years, now our aim is basically to go on improving the pay package for the subsequent batches and rope in more organisations in the recruitment process. We aspire to place our courses at the pinnacle as far as super-specialisation courses go, said Khanna.
