IITians are all set to conquer the world.
Convocation held at IIT Delhi
The smiling faces said it all. Years of hard work had finally borne fruit as 1,320 students at the Under Graduate, Post Graduate, MBA and Ph D level at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IITD) were awarded degrees in person and in absentia during the 35th Convocation which was held in the institute recently.
As a graduating engineer in mechanical engineering, Abhishek Rathi said: "It was my dream to study in one of the IITs.
The first part of the dream came true when I cleared the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination four years ago and joined IITD. Now, with the successful completion of the programme I have achieved what I always aspired for. It was an amazing experience to be here for four years, as competitive environment and quality of people made the place more special." Rathi has joined Maruti Udyog Ltd as graduating trainee engineer.
Another graduating engineer, Ankur Contractor who pursued M Tech in thermal engineering had a similar tale to tell. He remarked, "I always dreamt of graduating from one of the IITs. I couldn''t clear Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in my first attempt, but was determined to pursue M Tech from one of the IITs only. I finally cleared the examination in second attempt and it was worth spending two years at the IITD." Rathi will soon be joining the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre as scientific officer.
Earlier, while delivering the director''s report, the director of the IITD R S Sirohi presented a brief report highlighting the institute''s activities, achievement and future plans.
Delivering the convocation address, the chief guest and an alumnus of the IITD and senior partner worldwide of Mckinsey and Company, Rajat Gupta remarked, "The Americans got it right when they called today''s event not a ''graduation'' but a ''commencement''. I believe that those of you who make today the moment you graduate from learning will miss an opportunity and miss a beat in understanding what is happening in the global economy. Whilst, those who make today the commencement of a lifelong and professional quest to know more, each day will live fruitful and successful lives."
The chairman of board of governors at the IITD, M G K Menon conferred the degree of doctor of science on professor C N R Rao and the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, G Madhavan Nair. Distinguished alumni awards were conferred on several others present on the occasion as well, while Varun Gupta was awarded President''s Gold Medal in absentia. Several other students were awarded with medals, awards, and certificates in different categories.
