Chaitanya Raja protests ‘false’ portrayal of Ettappa Maharaja in Tamil Nadu Class 10 history textbooks
The 42nd titular king of the Ettayapuram Samasthanam, Chaitanya Raja, led a protest in Ettayapuram, Thoothukudi district, demanding the removal of historical inaccuracies about the Ettappa Maharaja from school textbooks. The demonstration took place at the goat market grounds and was organised by local residents and traders who insist that the true history of Ettayapuram must be represented accurately. Over 600 people joined the protest, raising slogans calling for immediate action, ANI reported.
Speaking to reporters, Chaitanya Raja emphasised the impact of popular culture on public perception. He said that due to dialogues in certain films, people without proper knowledge of history have been spreading misconceptions. For two generations, the royal family has suffered because of this. At first, they did not think cinema would have such an impact, but now some use it to malign their legacy. He added that it is their duty to bring out the true history of the Ettayapuram palace and the unique story behind the Ettappa Maharaja title, according to ANI.
The protest focused heavily on Class 10 history textbooks, which Chaitanya Raja claims carry incorrect references to the Ettappa Maharaja. A petition demanding corrections was already submitted to School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi. Chaitanya Raja said that the minister assured them these inaccuracies would be removed in the next academic year, ANI reported.
The former royal family has called for history to remain free from political or cinematic distortions. Chaitanya Raja cited official government archives, including records and colonial-era correspondences, as proof of the authentic events surrounding the Ettayapuram palace and the Maharaja title. He added that the history of Ettayapuram is rich and filled with important details, and if examined carefully, the truth will emerge, ANI reported.
Former AIADMK MLA Chinnappan joined the protest, voicing solidarity with the royal family. He stated that, once his party returns to power, a memorial hall, or Manimandapam, would be constructed to honour Ettappa Maharaja, according to ANI.
The issue has sparked renewed debate in Tamil Nadu about historical representation in school textbooks. Educators and historians have long debated the accuracy of regional histories. The case of Ettayapuram shows how narratives shaped by cinema or politics can influence generations. Chaitanya Raja’s protest highlights the demand for fact-based education. The focus is not only on preserving legacy. It is also on ensuring students learn history without distortion.
As the state prepares for the next academic year, attention turns to whether the government will implement the promised revisions. The outcome could set a precedent for how historical figures and regional histories are taught in Tamil Nadu’s educational curriculum.
