CBSE to implement on-screen marking for class 12 board exams from 2026-27: Schools asked to ensure technical readiness
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books beginning with the 2026 board examinations. The decision is aimed at improving accuracy, efficiency and transparency in the assessment process.
CBSE conducts Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations annually in India and across 26 countries, covering nearly 46 lakh students. While Class 12 answer sheets will move to digital evaluation from 2026, Class 10 answer books will continue to be assessed in physical mode for now.
The notification regarding the new system is dated February 9, 2026. Candidates and school officials can check the CBSE notice by clicking here.
Under the new system, Class 12 answer books will be scanned and evaluated digitally by examiners. Teachers will mark scripts on a computer instead of handling physical copies.
The Board stated that the move will eliminate totalling errors and reduce manual intervention. It also observed that verification of marks after the results will not be required under this mechanism, which will also reduce the manpower needs.
The CBSE further stated that digital evaluating would help expedite the process of checking, as well as encourage maximum involvement by teachers, including those from the affiliated schools abroad.
The Board has highlighted several advantages of the On-Screen Marking system:
CBSE has directed schools to prepare the required infrastructure for smooth implementation. Schools must ensure:
To facilitate the transition, CBSE will allow all teachers with OASIS IDs to log in and familiarise themselves with the platform. The Board will also conduct multiple dry runs and organise training programmes to explain the system.
In addition, a call centre will be set up to resolve issues, and instructional videos will be released for better understanding.
CBSE said detailed instructions for each activity will be issued separately to ensure timely action by all stakeholders.
