AIIMS Darbhanga gets Union Cabinet nod, to be built within four years

PATNA/ DARBHANGA: In a boost to the healthcare sector in Bihar ahead of the coming elections, the state will get its second AIIMS at Darbhanga after Patna.


The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the project under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, which will be built within four years for Rs 1,264 crore.

Apart from a medical college, the proposed institution with a capacity of 750 beds will have several categories of beds, including AYUSH, private beds and speciality and super speciality beds. The premier hospital is being developed over an area of 200acres at the Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital.

Thanking PM Modi for providing a second AIIMS to Bihar and the 22nd AIIMS in the country, Union minister of state for health Ashwini Kumar Choubey said, “AIIMS-Darbhanga will not only provide affordable and modern medical facilities to the people of north Bihar’s Mithila region but also serve the bordering districts of Nepal and Bengal.”

“The proposed AIIMS at Darbhanga will add 100 seats for MBBS, 60 seats of BSc (nursing) and will run 15 to 20 super speciality departments. It will have a capacity of 2,000 OPD per day and 1,000 IPD per month. Super speciality courses like PG and DM will also be started here,” Choubey further said in a statement issued on Tuesday evening.

State health minister Mangal Pandey also expressed his gratitude to PM Modi and his council of ministers through a tweet. “The Union Cabinet has approved the building of

at a cost of Rs 1,264 crores. On behalf of all people of Bihar, I would like to thank PM Modi and members of the council of ministers on giving the second AIIMS to Bihar,” he tweeted.

Similarly, expressing his gratitude to PM Modi, deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted. “Special hospitals have already been established at Muzaffarpur in north Bihar, which is dedicated to the treatment of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome. People who have made government hospitals yearn for cotton, needles and medicines are surprised by the great work done by PM Modi’s government.”

Describing the proposed at AIIMS at Darbhanga as a historic gift for the Mithila region, state water resources minister Sanjay Kumar Jha, said, “I am happy that AIIMS-Darbhanga has got approval from the Union Cabinet. Construction of Darbhanga airport is also nearing completion. After the airport, the construction of AIIMS at Darbhanga will lead to all-round development and rejuvenation of the entire Mithila region.”

He added: “The people of Mithila will no longer have to go to Delhi for better treatment. They will save money and time. Also, new employment opportunities will be created around the airport and AIIMS.”

BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Darbhanga Gopal Jee Thakur, who has played an instrumental role in proposing AIIMS at Darbhanga, told this newspaper over the phone from Delhi, “Besides providing quality treatment to the people of several districts of Mithila and the bordering areas of Nepal, AIIMS Darbhanga will give employment to more than 3,000 people.”

DMCH principal HN Jha said, “The entire medical fraternity in Bihar is elated over this historic decision. We have already allocated 200 acres of land at DMCH for the construction of AIIMS.”
