AI could think independently soon, says former Google CEO: Here is how graduates can future-proof their careers
Artificial intelligence is evolving faster than many of us realise. At a forum at the Harvard Kennedy School on Monday, former Google CEO Eric E. Schmidt warned that AI capable of learning on its own could arrive within four years. Coverage by The Harvard Crimson highlighted Schmidt’s prediction that this next stage of AI could fundamentally change the way we work, the skills we need, and how careers develop. For graduating students and early-career professionals, this isn’t just news—it’s a call to action.
Schmidt explained that today’s AI still needs human guidance. But that’s about to change. He described a future where AI can think, reason, and improve itself—what experts call “recursive self-improvement.” According to The Harvard Crimson, Schmidt suggested that AI might soon generate medical insights, discover new facts, and even tackle complex mathematics. The question for humans is how to stay ahead while maintaining control.
AI is entering the workforce
The reality is that many tasks currently done by humans could soon be handled by AI. Routine data analysis, calculations, and repetitive processes are particularly vulnerable. Schmidt emphasised that humans must remain in control of AI decisions. Graduates who rely solely on technical or routine skills risk being outpaced. Understanding AI and how it integrates with human judgment is becoming essential.Skills that matter
So, what should students focus on to stay relevant? Schmidt highlighted several key areas reported by The Harvard Crimson:- Critical thinking: Analyse data, interpret context, and make sound decisions.
- Creativity: Generate solutions, innovate, and approach problems from new angles.
- Leadership and ethical reasoning: Manage teams and make responsible decisions.
- AI literacy: Learn how AI works, its limits, and how to collaborate with it effectively.
Combine knowledge across fields
AI isn’t just for tech jobs; its applications are expanding across healthcare, finance, education, research, and manufacturing. Graduates who combine their field knowledge with AI skills gain a significant advantage in the job market. For example, healthcare students can leverage AI-assisted diagnostics to improve patient care, business students can use AI tools for analytics and strategic decision-making, and engineers can design products enhanced by AI technologies. The more a professional integrates domain expertise with AI capabilities, the more valuable they become in the workplace, positioning themselves to thrive in an AI-driven future.Keep an eye on the global AI race
Schmidt also raised an important point about international competition. According to The Harvard Crimson, China is advancing quickly in open-source AI development, making it easier for their technologies to spread globally. In contrast, many U.S. AI models are closed-source, which can slow adoption. Students and young professionals should follow global trends, explore ethical open-source projects, and think about how their skills fit into the worldwide AI landscape. How to future-proof your career
Here’s a practical roadmap for graduates to stay ahead of AI:- Keep learning: Stay updated on new technologies, AI tools, and industry trends.
- Focus on human strengths: Creativity, critical thinking, and ethical judgment are irreplaceable.
- Build interdisciplinary skills: Combine your domain knowledge with AI expertise.
- Stay globally aware: Follow international developments and open-source AI initiatives.
- Think ethically: Understand AI’s social impact and work to keep it human-centered.
