Navy Chief Admiral DK Tripathi is on a four-day visit to neighbouring Myanmar to strengthen defence ties with the nation. During his visit, Admiral Tripathi will hold bilateral meetings with gefence minister General U Htun Aung, commander-in-chief of the Myanmar armed forces ceneral Ye Win Oo, and commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Navy admiral Htein Win, as well as other senior officials from the armed forces of Myanmar.
Admiral Tripathi will review ongoing maritime cooperation with Myanmar. The visit aims to strengthen operational-level linkages and explore new areas for collaboration. During the visit, which concludes on May 5, Admiral Tripathi will visit the Central Naval Command, Naval Training Command and the First fleet of the Myanmar Navy. The navy chief will also lay a wreath at the Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial.
India and Myanmar have a strong defence relationship, which is rooted in both geography and strategic initiatives. Defence cooperation between the two nations is anchored by mechanisms such as the regional border committee meetings, joint boundary working groups, as well as regular interactions between the three armed forces of the two countries. Agreements such as the 2017 MoU on maritime security and the 2019 defence cooperation cement this strong relationship. These documents and understandings between the two nations have opened doors for joint activities such as the India–Myanmar Naval Exercise (IMNEX), Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrols (IMCOR), hydrography surveys, and training exchanges. The two countries share a 1,643 km long land border and four Indian states, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram share borders with Myanmar. The country is seen as a key gateway for India to South East Asia.
The navies of the two countries also share a warm relationship. Myanmar's navy takes part in key Indian Naval initiatives such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN, International Fleet Review, Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR and the Admiral’s Cup.
Admiral Tripathi’s four-day visit underscores defence ties between the two countries through high-level talks, naval command engagements and symbolic gestures. Despite challenges from Myanmar’s political instability, insurgency in India’s Northeast, and China’s influence, the relationship remains key for India.
