Indian Coast Guard commissions new-gen fast patrol vessel 'Achal'
NEW DELHI: The Indian Coast Guard marked a significant enhancement in its operational capability with the commissioning of ICGS Achal, the latest vessel in the new-generation Adamya-class fast patrol vessel series, at Goa Shipyard Ltd on Saturday.
Named ‘Achal’, meaning ‘firm’, the 5th fast patrol vessel has 60% indigenous content, dual-class certification (ABS & IRS), and a top speed of 27 knots. It will boost coastal security and offshore asset protection. Built at a cost Rs 473 crore, the project strengthens the Indian Coast Guard and supports the govt’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat by generating jobs and empowering MSMEs, the defence ministry said.
The vessel symbolises the Coast Guard’s steadfast commitment towards safeguarding national maritime interests, protecting life at sea and ensuring the security of India’s maritime frontiers. The vessel will undertake a wide spectrum of maritime operations, including coastal and offshore surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue (SAR), anti-smuggling operations, and marine pollution response.
The ship was formally commissioned into service by A Anbarasu, additional secretary & director general (acquisition), ministry of defence, in the presence of IG Tekur Sashi Kumar, commander, Coast Guard region (north-west) and senior officials of central, state and shipyard officials.
Incorporating over 50% indigenous components, the vessel underscores the nation’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and aligns with the govt’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives.
