The legendary former captain — who gave India its first World Cup victory in 1983 — underwent heart surgery last year. In this 2020 Mumbai Mirror piece, he talks about why it wasn't easy for him to come to terms with his retirement, and what has kept him going
'Kapil Dev suffers a heart attack.’ ‘Kapil Dev undergoes heart surgery.’ The last few weeks, social media has been flooded with posts related to the former India World Cup-winning captain’s health. Dev was in hospital to undergo angioplasty and prayers poured in for his speedy recovery. Perhaps the last time the country prayed for an icon’s recovery in such a fashion was in 1982 when Amitabh Bachchan had to be hospitalised with a ruptured intestine during a shoot.
In less than 20 days after being discharged from the hospital, Dev was seen last week teeing off at the Delhi Golf Club, a walking distance from his home. “You can't express in words what fun it is to be back on the golf course or a cricket ground. It is beautiful to be back at the golf course, having fun and playing with friends. That's what life is all about,” he said in a video posted for his fans and well-wishers, with a grin.
