CHENNAI: Cruuuuuunch! That''s the sound that emanates when ball hits the sweet spot of the bat. And when the stroke produced is a straight or a cover drive and that too from the stylish Wasim Jaffer, the sound is harmonious.

The Mumbai opener was in his elements on Thursday and was really dishing it out to skipper Sairaj Bahutule, speedster Munaf Patel and the fully fit Avishkar Salvi.
When another bullet passed Sairaj, he smiled at Jaffer as if to suggest, "Yaar kal aisa khel ke dikha, mazaa aa jayega." (Mate, play like this tomorrow, it will be good fun.)

Mumbai will want not just Jaffer, but all its personnel firing on all cylinders against hosts Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy final, which begins at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday. The contest between the two top national sides have always generated heat and it would be no different this time.

Talking of heat, Chennai at this time of the year is sizzling hot and one wonders what the players are doing playing cricket in such weather.

Coach Chandrakant Pandit, who has seen the defending champions Mumbai to their second successive final though sounded cool about the heat. And that wasn''t only because he was sporting a pair of incredibly smart sunglasses.

"What heat are we talking about here? Mumbai is much hotter than this. I don''t think it will bother us at all." Just when you think there is an air of cockiness in the former Indian wicket keeper, he adds, "Tamil Nadu is a good team. Mumbai and Tamil Nadu have had some close battles in the past and I expect this one to be no different."

The coach is right. Last year''s final between the two sides was one heck of a close battle. TN bowled out Mumbai for 260 and were looking good at 202 for 4 before collapsing to 271 all out.

TEAMS

Tamil Nadu: S Suresh (Captain), S Ramesh, S Sriram, Hemang K Badani, S Badrinath, S Sharath, Dinesh Karthick, V Sivaramakrishnan, R Ramkumar, R Naresh, C Ganapathy, K Shri Vasudeva Das, Sunil Viswanathan, M R Shrinivas and Jesuraj.

Mumbai: Sairaj Bahutule (capt), Vinod Kambli (vice-capt), Wasim Jaffer, Vinayak Mane, Bhavin Thakkar, Amol Muzumdar, Vinayak Samant (wk), Usman Malvi, Nilesh Kulkarni, Avishkar Salvi, Munaf Patel, Robin Morris, Vinit Indulkar, Manoj Joglekar, Rahul Thakur.

Umpires: S K Porel (Kolkata) and A S Mahal (Punjab).

<formid=367815></formid=367815>
