SRIKAKULAM: The bodies of nine persons from Srikakulam district, who died in a wall collapse in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, are expected to arrive in the district on Tuesday evening.
"The bodies were dispatched through ambulances from the mortuary of the hospital in Tiruvallur on Monday evening and are expected to arrive in Srikakulam by Tuesday evening," S Babji Rao, tehsildar of Burja mandal in Srikakulam district told TOI
.
The sole survivor of the tragedy from Srikakulam, 18-year-old S Nagaraju, whose father passed away in the incident, will be returning to Srikakulam after being discharged from the hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment, Babji added.
Babji is part of a team of district officials that is supervising the transportation of bodies of the deceased workers.
Meanwhile, labour minister K Atchannaidu instructed the district administration officials to release money to the families of the victims for funeral expenses. According to the minister, the state government has already announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to be given to the kin of each victim soon after the last rites are performed.
It may be mentioned that nine persons from the district, including five from a single family, died when the compound wall of an under construction private warehouse collapsed on some makeshift huts housing the construction workers at Uttarapalayam in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Naidu.
This is the second tragedy to strike construction workers from Srikakulam working in Tamil Nadu, after the June 28 building collapse in Chennai.
