Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has emerged second in the ranking of ports on cleanliness and sanitation parameters undertaken for the first time by the ministry of shipping. The top spot was claimed by Haldia Dock with a score of 782 points, whereas VPT secured the second spot with 750 points.
Port officials said the Quality Council of India (QCI) had carried out the assessment based on sanitation and cleanliness efforts being carried out at the 12 major ports in the country.
The criteria to assess the parameters also included waste segregation, solid and liquid management of incoming ships, waste management in the port operations and township area of the major ports.
The major initiatives, which helped the major port bag the second spot included the green initiatives such as plantation drive and setting up of 6.25 MW of solar project and 190 KW power projects using the rooftop spaces of the port. Also, the office buildings and quarters were refurbished in addition to construction and maintenance of toilets in different parts near the port area.
