Visakhapatnam doctors treat largest brain aneurysm patient

VISAKHAPATNAM: City hospital doctors successfully performed surgery on one of the largest brain aneurysms reported in the country Supra-Giant Brain Aneurysm. They saved a woman from Kakinada in East Godavari districts by performing surgery on a complex aneurysm..

Doctor Sibasankar Dalai said that a 56-year-old woman Y Veera Kumari had a sudden severe headache and diminishing vision in the left eye. And in the subsequent two days, the vision came down drastically and her headache got worse. She was examined in the local hospital and a couple of other hospitals in Visakhapatnam. She was later diagnosed with a brain aneurysm of about 43 mm which is large in dimension. It is one of the largest brain aneurysms reported in the country with complex anatomy. It required a certain degree of expertise to handle this complex surgery.

They consulted doctor Sibasankar Dalai and his team at Medicover Hospital in Visakhapatnam. The patient was thoroughly investigated and evaluated for emergency treatment. The patient was taken for a flow diverter embolization with coiling. This aneurysm was too huge and the team performed the surgery. The patient recovered over the next 3-4 days and she was discharged from the hospital on Thursday.

Doctor Sibasankar Dalai said that a Brain Aneurysm is a balloon-like swelling over the blood vessels of the brain. Once there is a swelling of the blood vessel, it becomes thinned out and has the propensity to bleed and rebleed. Once an aneurysm in the brain bleeds, 30-40 % of people can't reach a hospital within time and they will die of the bleed. Another 60 to 70% of the people who come to the hospital can experience a rebleeding of this aneurysm. Hence treating an aneurysm is very important and is an emergency, the doctor said.
