The syndrome would attack the immune system in the body and nervous system.

Doctors have observed that a few people are developing Guillain-Barre syndrome after contracting Covid-19. The symptoms will be dehydration and numbness in the hands and legs. Later the patient's health would be in an irreversible condition.

The woman from the port city was diagnosed with this disease. After more than 100 days of treatment at the hospital, she was discharged by neurologists Ch Vijay and Voodi Manasa.

The woman developed a severe level of Guillain-Barre syndrome. As the disease progressed rapidly, doctors put her on a ventilator within a week after being admitted to the hospital. She was given intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) injections based on her body weight.

“Even after IVIG injection her condition did not improved and we kept her on the ventilator for a long time before conducting tracheostomy. Ten days after the first dose of IVIG, our team made a bold decision and gave another dose of IVIG. In medical history, very few patients recovered after administering a second dose,” doctors Vijay and Manasa said.

With proper nursing care, constant monitoring in the ICU, physiotherapy, and adequate support from her family, she returned to normalcy and was able to walk on her own. A week after the first IVIG dose, she became quadriplegic (quadriparesis means that the muscles of both legs and arms would be very weak) and remained on the ventilator.
