VISAKHAPATNAM: The ward/village secretariat system has been on the forefront in providing services to the public at their doorstep, leading to good governance, said Visakhapatnam collector Dr A Mallikarjuna.

The collector launched the Good Governance Week celebrations here at the collectorate on Friday. Speaking on this occasion, Mallikarjuna said that dissemination workshops will be conducted as part of the good governance week celebrations at district- and mandal-level.

“The secretariat system has reduced the work burden on the mandal-level offices. The secretariats are not only providing the regular public services, but also extending all the services to the farmers. Officials should make it a habit to meet the public and farmers on a regular basis and discuss their requirements. Land pooling for construction of houses for the homeless poor was done in a transparent manner without spending a single rupee. A land resurvey is being carried out to create litigation-free records,” said Mallikarjuna. District education officer L Chandrakala explained the developmental initiatives in the education sector. “The attendance details of the students are being shared with the volunteers, which is helping in reducing the absenteeism and the dropouts,” said Chandra Kala.

Officials from the district health department and the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation also spoke about the good practices adopted in their departments.
