Visakhapatnam: DIG urges people to shift from ganja to commercial crops

NARSIPATNAM: The Vizag range DIG LKV Ranga Rao advised the sarpanches of Visakha Rural area to create awareness among the villagers to shift them to commercial crops from ganja cultivation. Visakha rural area should get a good name across the nation from the name of the ganja hub.
While addressing the gathering at Indian Medical Association Hall here on Wednesday on an awareness meeting on ganja eradication, the DIG Ranga Rao said the sarpanches have the responsibility to drive the villages in a good route.
More than 100 sarpanches from Visakha rural area, police officials and sub-inspectors attended the meeting, in which sarpanches took the pledge for eradication of ganja.
He said cultivating ganja and transportation is illegal and supporting such kind of activity is also illegal. “Narsipatnam got a bad name across the nation as it is the starting point for the transportation of ganja. Ganja cultivation has brought a bad name to the Visakha rural area, in particular the tribal area. People should go for commercial crops by stopping the ganja cultivation and that would get financial stability,” the DIG said.
Agency area should be developed with medicinal crops which have demand in the markets. The tribal area would be developed as a tourism destination rather than ganja cultivated area, then only the Visakha agency would get a good reputation. Visakha rural SP B Krishna Rao, Narrsipatnam ASP Manikantha Chandolu and others participated.
