VISAKHAPATNAM: Unicef-Hyderabad C4D specialist, Seema Kumar, and child protection officer, M Muralikrishna, visited Andhra University on Tuesday and reviewed the activities of the AU NSS Cell and Unicef joint project titled “Engaging NSS volunteers for adolescents empowerment programme in
Visakhapatnam district”.
The first phase of the programme was completed by March 2018 and the ongoing second phase was launched in April 2018.
According to Seema, Unicef India is addressing children’s issues across the country with 15 different models, with the Andhra University NSS Cell Unicef model being one among them. “This model of involving NSS volunteers in empowering adolescents through Andhra University NSS Cell stood first among all the 15 different models and it will be emulated in other parts of the country. The NSS volunteers, who are expected to deliver community development services become change agents in this project and act as peer leaders. They have led campaigns against issues like child marriage, child labour, child trafficking, child abuse, malnourishment, etc.,” said Seema.
Earlier, the Unicef team met vice-chancellor Prof G Nageswara Rao, rector Prof M Prasada Rao and registrar Prof K Niranjan. The NSS programme coordinator, S Haranath, and AU-Unicef project coordinator, Y Ramesh Babu, were also present.
