‘Take measures to combat water pollution’

Visakhapatnam: Jana Sena state environment wing general secretary Bolisetty Satyanarayana demanded that the state government take measures to control increasing pollution in the seawater. He said pollution poses a threat to the public, especially the fishermen. He requested the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the high court to take measures and initiate suo moto case in this regard. He said there is a need for a special Act for the protection of fishermen. While addressing the media, Satyanarayana alias Satya said industrial pollution is leading to decline in marine species. “The pollution control board had studied industrial pollution and submitted a report in 2016, but there was no action and people are suffering from pharma pollution.” He alleged around 200 ML of the 300 ML sewage water is directly discharged into the sea, and only 100 ML is treated. The fishermen wing leaders of JS demanded the government to pay compensation to the fishermen who were evicted for the container terminal. He said there was no rehabilitation for those who were displaced from Gangavaram port lands. They reminded that the NGT had imposed 5 crore fine on the government.

NGT focus on Howrah eateries polluting river

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed concern over the discharge of untreated sewage into the Hooghly River from eateries along the riverfront in Kolkata. The NGT has demanded an explanation from relevant departments as to why its previous orders have not been followed. Environmental activist Subhas Datta has requested immediate action to stop pollution and remove encroachments from the riverbanks. The application alleges that hotels and eateries are operating without the necessary consent and are directly releasing waste into the river. The NGT has also accused the state of constructing toilets with waste flowing into the river.

Steps to curb pollution discussed

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and Punjab Pollution Control Board organized a public awareness program called "Healthy air-healthy planet" to commemorate International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. The event aimed to educate residents about pollution causes and solutions, including planting trees and avoiding the use of banned plastic bags and open burning of waste. The MC chief emphasized the importance of regular drives to raise awareness about pollution control.

Lodge plaints over polluted water at households: PHED

Issues with old pipelines, illegal connections, and lack of repair are causing leakages in the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) pipelines in Jaipur. This leads to contaminated water supply in households. The replacement of pipelines in certain areas under the Amrut 1.0 project has reduced leakages. PHED engineers and chemists conduct regular inspections to detect leakages and assess water quality. Hotspots with persistent water quality problems receive more frequent inspections. The aim is to identify and address leakages and ensure clean water supply.
