Visakhapatnam: Opener and wicket-keeper Sraman Nigrodh’s century (143; 204b, 4x21.6x1) helped Bihar to post 308 for eight on the first day of a group league match of the Col. CK Nayudu trophy tournament at the Anantapur Sports Village on Sunday. Andhra captain P Girinath Reddy won the toss and put Bihar in and picked up three wickets to reduce Bihar to three for 42. But southpaw Nigrodh rescued Bihar with two century partnerships: 117 for the fourth with Vivek Kumar (41) and 100 for the fifth with Paramjeet Singh (55). Y Sandeep broke both the partnerships. Girinath finished the day with four wickets.
Brief scores: Bihar 300/8 in 89.2 overs (Sraman Nigrodh 143, Paramjeet Singh 55, Vivek Kumar 41; P. Girinath Reddy 4/79) vs. Andhra.
Koushik Sai, Hemalatha bag medals
Dr. L. Bullayya College student A Koushik Sai Surya won discuss throw gold medal while A Hemalatha won the 800m bronze medal and was member of the district 4x100 m relay team that won gold medal, in the state-level School Games Federation of AP athletic meet held in Srikakulam last week. Secretary and correspondent of the college G Madhu Kumar and others congratulated the athletes, informed physical director BRS Lakshmana Reddy.
AU lifter wins gold
S Pallavi won a gold medal for Andhra University in the all-India inter-university weightlifting meet in Calicut on Saturday. She won the medal in the 64 kg category, informed AU director of physical education N Vijaya Mohan. Vice-chancellor PVGD Prasada Reddy and others congratulated Pallavi and her coach Y Srinivasa Rao of Dr L Bullayya College.
Ex-sports minister condoled
Rich tributes were paid to the former state sports minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Sunday. Dr Vasantha Kumar was elected from Unguturu in West Godavari. He was also a good tennis player and did his Ph D in commerce and management under the guidance of I Muralikrishna Rao in 2014. Former secretary of AU sports board PR Narayanaswami and others condoled Dr Vasantha Kumar’s death.
