Visakhapatnam: The Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) and police department intensified raids to put an end to the hooch production and consumption in the villages in Anakapalle district.
Though there are no major organised gangs involved in hooch trade in the district, the officials have decided to visit the remote villages to curb hooch production.
Speaking to TOI, joint director of SEB, Anakapalle, B Vijay Bhaskar said the district has over 690 villages and hooch is brewed in over 150 villages.
The SEB, with the support of police, has successfully made over 130 villages hooch-free. “We have identified over 15 villages in the district where some groups have been brewing hooch for easy money,” he said.
Production of hooch is an offence and consumption of the same is very dangerous to health. “Action has been taken against the persons who produced and supplied it. Anyone indulging in unlawful activities will be sent to jail. We will conduct a series of raids with the help of police to make the 15 villages hooch-free in the coming days,”
Vijay Bhaskar added.
“We have destroyed over 8,665 litres of hooch that was seized in 1,391 cases in the past two years. The government has banned hooch to boost a healthy life. Our teams will continue their operation to destroy hooch in the coming days and we will nab the producers as well as transporters of the hooch,” said Gowthami Sali, SP, Anakapalle.
