VISAKHAPATNAM: A group of students with the support of few students' organisations damaged the glasses and furniture of Aditya Degree College at Rama Talkies Road on Saturday.
Sources said the students were angry over the death of Priyanka Prasad, a second-year degree student of the college. The vice-principal and two teachers were taken into custody for interrogation and later released, sources in the police department said.
Priyanka, the daughter of small businessman Subernath Prasad of Bihar, died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday. Leaders of the students' organisations alleged that Priyanka complained of dizziness and weakness, but three lecturers of the college taunted her by saying that she was finding an excuse to get out of the college to meet a friend. After some time, she fell unconscious and even then the teachers did not shift her to a hospital. After about an hour's delay, she was shifted to a hospital by her classmates where she was declared dead due to dehydration, sources said.
On Saturday, students gathered at the college and demanded action against the faculty members and compensation to the family members of the deceased. When the management refused to pay the compensation of Rs 10 lakh, students damaged college property.
Cops of Dwaraka police station rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors. However, SFI activist USN Raju said the police told the students and parents of the girl not to lodge a complaint against the management. Raju said that they will approach city police chief Amit Garg as they have lost faith on the cops of Dwaraka police Station.
Meanwhile, Dwaraka police inspector A Shanmukha Rao said that he called parents of the girl, college management and the student leaders to the station in the morning and told them to lodge complaints if necessary. However, the activists are yet to file any complaint and no arrests were made so far, he said.
