VISAKHAPATNAM: The National Medical Commission has given its approval for the new medical college in Vizianagaram with an intake of 150 MBBS seats.

District collector A Surya Kumari said that the college will start functioning from the next academic year, 2023-24. "A team from the NMC had recently visited Vizianagaram and taken stock of infrastructural facilities, including the faculty, needed to start the college. The construction works of the college are going on at a rapid speed," said Surya Kumari.

The Vizianagaram district officials received the NMC's consent letter on February 20. The admissions into MBBS course will be conducted through NEET.

The college is being constructed with about ₹500 crore in Gajularega. According to the officials, tens of faculty members have already been appointed for the college, which will come up in about 70 acres. While the total extent will be around 14 lakh square feet, works have begun to create 6 lakh square feet in the first phase.
