Low-pressure likely to become cyclonic storm

IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in West Bengal and north east states... Read More
VISAKHAPATNAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a low-pressure system formed over southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and there are some chances that it would develop into a cyclonic storm in the coming week.

If the system is realised, this will be the first cyclone developing in the North Indian ocean basin this year.

The weather system may not have any impact on Andhra Pradesh coast. The low-pressure area will help monsoon advance over the Andamans sea and adjoining Bay of Bengal, and it may not have an impact on the onset of monsoon in Kerala.

Scientist at IMD-Amaravati, Dr S Karuna Sagar said the low-pressure area prevails off north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts. The system is likely to move north-eastwards and strengthen into a depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by May 24 (Friday). The system would continue to move north-eastwards and intensify further thereafter.

With the formation of the low-pressure, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of West Bengal and parts of the north east states on May 25 and 26.

The IMD-Amaravati forecast that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds with 30-40 kmph speed is likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema till May 26.
