VISAKHAPATNAM: A day after TOI published an article on the diversion of chicken waste from
Vizag city to fishponds and prawn ponds in the neighbouring districts, GVMC deputy mayors J Sridhar, and K Satish and GVMC YSRC floor leader B Srinivasa Rao said that the GVMC would initiate stringent action against the culprits.
Sridhar said there was no elected council between 2012 and 2021.
“Some vested interests had taken advantage of this and used to transport chicken and other meat waste to fish and prawn ponds. This caused a dent to the revenue of the civic body. But after the new council assumed office in March 2021, we discussed this issue with the GVMC commissioner and mayor. Subsequently, contractors for transportation of chicken waste to the dumping yard were selected through an open bidding process. However, we came to know that some rowdy elements and private persons are still indulging in the same practice,” he said.
GVMC officials are seizing the vehicles and booking cases against the culprits. “The drive will be intensified further to completely prevent this practice in the city,” the GVMC said.
