Green group distributes rice, toys and chocolates in exchange for plastic

Kakinada: A green organisation based out of social media named — ‘Manna Peddapuram’ is taking the eco-friendly cause of doing away with single-use plastic to the next level. The group is giving out 1kg rice in exchange for 1kg plastic to people of Peddapuram in East Godavari district.
Hundreds of people are coming to them to exchange plastic for rice, chocolates or toys. The group is also considering giving out onions in exchange. Upon having collected the plastic, the group gives the plastic to the Peddapuram municipality, who in turn send it to Vijayawada for recycling.
The group plans to extend their space and collect plastic from 26 villages in Peddapuram mandal. The campaign has encouraged ten other organisations to start similar campaigns in Samalkota, Jaggampeta, Eleswaram and Thimmapuram.
Speaking to TOI, Vangalapudi Siva Krishna, the admin of the group said that the slogan of their campaign is ‘avoid plastic, avoid hunger’.
