VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has been entrusted with the task of collecting professional tax from various professionals within its limits from April 1, 2014. Announcing this on Friday, GVMC commissioner, MV Satyanarayana instructed the officials concerned to make all the requisite arrangements to collect professional tax from assessees like businessmen, corporate employees, doctors and lawyers.
However, farmers and artisans will be exempted from paying professional tax, he added.
Though earlier the department of commercial taxes used to collect professional tax, the state government has taken the decision to entrust the job to GVMC. According to GVMC's preliminary estimates, it hopes to collect professional tax to the tune of Rs 40 crore from nearly 25,000 assessees in its limits per annum.
