Google announces world’s largest AI and data centre hub in Visakhapatnam
VISAKHAPATNAM: In a landmark announcement, Global CEO Thomas Kurien revealed plans to establish the company’s largest AI and hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
“We’re very pleased to announce a new gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam — the largest AI hub we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the United States,” said Kurien. “It represents a capital investment of $15 billion over the next five years and will scale to multiple gigawatts.”
Kurien added that this facility will be part of a global network of AI centres spread across 12 countries, with Visakhapatnam emerging as the flagship hub outside the US.
Additionally, Google Cloud plans to transform Visakhapatnam into a global connectivity hub by landing its subsea cable infrastructure in the city. This will be integrated into Google’s global subsea network, making Visakhapatnam a major digital backbone for India — connecting multiple regions and strengthening the country’s technological ecosystem.
“We are not just bringing AI technology,” Kurien emphasized, “but also building digital infrastructure through our subsea cable and network connectivity hub.”
Speaking during Google-Andhra Pradesh government MoU signing for mega data centre, CM Chandrababu Naidu stated, "It is a very auspicious and happy day for me and all of us. First of all, I have to thank honourable prime minister, he has made it possible. Our that our finance minister (Nirmala Sitharaman), she has done very well and our IT minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) - when I mooted the idea, he was very positive... Google has to come to India and also (state) IT minister (Nara Lokesh) ... he also worked with you. I am a great admirer of Google. Your creativity and speed are very important. I brought Microsoft to Hyderabad, today, Google has come to Visakhapatnam, we are very happy. According to me, we are in inspiring time."
