Couple crushed under wheels of speeding lorry

crushed

under the

wheels

of a lorry that lost control and rammed into their motorcycle on the NH-16 stretch near Makarampuram under Kanchili police station limits in Srikakulam district on Friday.

The victims were identified as V Venkata Ramana (54) and his wife V Srilatha (48), residents of Sompeta town in Srikakulam district.

The incident took place when the couple was on their way to Behrampur in Odisha to attend a family get-together, said sub-inspector of Kanchili M Harikrishna.

The driver of the lorry resorted to over-speeding and eventually lost control over the vehicle, which hit the bike running at a speed of around 50 kmph.

As the lorry rammed into the two-wheeler, Ramana was crushed under the front wheels of the lorry, while his wife came under the lorry’s rear wheels.

Both of them suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot.

“We have taken the lorry driver into custody and booked him under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence),” said police officer Harikrishna.

The bodies of the two were shifted to a government hospital for autopsy and will be handed over to family members after the post mortem, he added.
