The TCR&TM Director, G Chinni Babu, stated that the life of the tribal people is closely associated with the forest, and their livelihoods also revolve around forest and forest-related products. The main livelihoods of the tribal people in the state are agriculture (settled agriculture and Podu), followed by livestock, Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP), forest-based livelihoods, and others, including salaried employment, petty business, traditional livelihoods, and others. Livestock and forest-based livelihoods are the subsistent economic activities of tribal communities.

In view of exploring livelihoods among the tribal communities in the state, the State Tribal Welfare Department and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, have jointly implemented action research projects in Alluri Sitaramaraju and Parvathipuram Manyam districts of AP through civil society organizations (Laya, Visakhapatnam, and Ingrain Technologies, Hyderabad).
