VISAKHAPATNAM: Three workers sustained
burn injuries
in an accident at
Steel Melting Shop
-2 (SMS) wing in
Vizag Steel Plant
(VSP) as a huge quantity of
hot metal
fell down. There was no casualty and the injured workers were shifted to the Steel Plant Hospital where the doctors said that their condition is out of danger.
The trade unions are expressing concern over the accidents in the industries on regular intervals and are demanding the industries to take safety precautions.
Six workers had received injuries in
Aurobindo Pharma Unit
in Ranastalam mandal when a water tank at a warehouse collapsed all of sudden on Thursday. A fire accident had occurred in Power Plant 2 of Vizag Steel Plant on November 5 due to leakage of oil from the lubrication system in the turbine area of the plant.
According to sources, the accident took place between 6.30pm to 7pm when hooks of a ladle carrying hot metal came off. More than 100 tonnes of hot metal fell down from a height of 30 to 40 feet. With the impact and the severe heat of the hot metal, workers in the vicinity received burn injuries. Generally, no worker would be there when the ladle operations are carried out. Most of the operations are mechanised.
Within minutes of the accident,
fire fighting teams
reached the SMS -2 wing and swung into action to douse the fire. The corporate communications wing head Sarma told TOI that the accident took place when the hooks of the ladle came out..
“Most of the hot metal that fell on the ground can be used again,”’ he said.
The steel plant recognised union secretary Ayodhya Ram told TOI that injured workers are out of danger.
