Visakhapatnam: Andhra defeated Assam by an innings and 95 runs in the final round league of the Ranji Trohy Elite group B match at the PVG Raju ACA sports complex, Chintalavalsa, Vizianagaram, on Thursday.
They are anxiously waiting for the result of the Mumbai-Maharashtra match on the fourth and final day on Friday and hoping to grab the second knockout berth from the group as these two teams tied on the first innings total.
Left-arm spinner A Lalith Mohan claimed five wickets, his sixth in 30 first class matches as Assam, resuming at 62 for five, were dismissed for 153, within in two hours on the third day.
He removed Gokul Sharma (25) and captain Kuna Saikia (36), who added 56 runs for the sixth wicket in the space of three balls, to remove whatever little chance Assam had in saving the match. Shoaib Md. Khan and M. Rayudu took two wickets each and the latter who took six wickets in the match, was adjudged Man of the Match.
Andhra gained seven points, including a bonus point, to finish with a tally of 26 points, on par with Saurashtra, who are fairly well placed against Tamil Nadu in another match.
If the Maharashtra (25 points)-Mumbai (23 points) match ends in a draw each team gets only one point, and Andhra can pip Maharashtra to the quarterfinal knockout berth as according to the BCCI rule bonus point win is first to be considered if two teams are tied on points.
