’s mother Zohara Bai (65) and his wife Mehrunnisa (37) were found dead in a pool of blood on February 7.

Probing into the case, cops questioned relatives, neighbours and friends but no leads could be found.

Sources said that police suspected the motive of the killing was robbery since Rs five lakh in cash was missing from the Jilani house. However, gold ornaments in the house were not touched by the assailants who had apparently beaten the two women with a cricket bat to death.

Assailants had also sprinkled chilli powder inside the house to mislead sniffer dogs and had locked the house from outside.

“We have been investigating the case from several angles including robbery and old rivalry but are yet to get any lead to establish the exact motive,” said Srikakulam deputy SP, AS Srinivas Chakravarthi.

Police have doubts as to how assailants managed to get the keys of the house to lock the door before escaping. Since there was no CCTV camera at the Jilani household, things have become even more difficult for cops.

Srikakulam Rural police inspector Lalitha said, “It would be very difficult to find the motive unless we nab the accused.”
