NEW DELHI: Two people drowned in the Godavari river when their boat capsized due to heavy winds near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on Monday evening.

The incident occurred at 7.30pm, and the bodies were recovered around 1am on Tuesday.

The group of twelve people was returning from Bridge Lanka, an island in the middle of the Godavari river, in a country boat when strong winds disrupted their journey.

"Twelve people were returning in a country boat from Bridge Lanka, an island in the middle of the Godavari river, when the tragedy occurred. Heavy winds swept the boat aside near Havelock Bridge pillar number eight," said Rajahmundry Central DSP K Ramesh Babu.

The passengers panicked and rushed to one side of the boat, causing it to lose balance and submerge. The two boat operators managed to rescue ten people, but two others lost their lives.

Police investigations revealed that the group had visited Bridge Lanka to attend a private event. The island is a popular destination for visitors seeking to enjoy the river breeze.

Country boats are not authorized to transport passengers and are only permitted for fishing activities. The police have registered a case regarding the incident.
