TDP corporator elected as deputy mayor of Tirupati municipal corporation
Tirupati: TDP corporator RC Munikirshna won the elections to the deputy mayor's post at the Tirupati municipal corporation (TMC) on Tuesday amidst a series of dramatic events. The meeting to elect the new deputy mayor was originally scheduled to be held on Monday amid heavy police presence, which was deferred to Tuesday due to lack of quorum.
Amid charges and counter charges of kidnapping and poaching, the election meeting began on Tuesday with joint collector Subham Bansal acting as the presiding officer. TDP corporator Munikrishna was declared elected when 26 of the 47 voters, including corporators and ex-officio members who attended the meeting, raised their hands in his favour, while YSRCP's T Bhaskar Reddy got the support of only 21 voters. Tirupati MP (YSRCP) M Gurumoorthy and MLA Arani Srinivasulu (Jana Sena) attended as ex-officio members and cast their votes.
High drama was witnessed over the last two days when YSRCP leaders alleged that some of their party's corporators were kidnapped. TDP and Jana Sena also alleged that YSRCP had held its corporators captive at a resort in Tamil Nadu.
