Vijayawada: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated steps to hand over the NH-16 stretch from Chinna Avutapalli to Kaza toll plaza to the roads and buildings (R&B) department. The move comes following the completion of Vijayawada West Bypass, which has been opened for vehicular traffic, which has altered traffic flow patterns and reduced the strategic necessity of this stretch under NH administration. Prior to the formal transfer, NHAI authorities will undertake one-time improvement works estimated at Rs 200 crore. These works include laying two layers of bituminous (BT) surfacing to enhance road quality and durability.
As part of the infrastructure upgrades, the NHAI is likely to construct two new foot overbridges (FOBs), one at Ramavarappadu Ring Road, where Eluru Road converges with NH-16, and another FOB at Mahanadu Junction near New Vijayawada Govt General Hospital (GGH), to allow pedestrians to easily cross the road at the two traffic junctions. Besides, the NHAI has also proposed the construction of a culvert over the Ryves canal near Gannavaram to improve connectivity and ensure smoother vehicular movement in the region.
"The onus to complete all state-requested works lies with the NHAI before the road is officially handed over to the R&B department. A detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed works is currently under preparation to finalise the scope of works to be executed as part of the one time development programme," NHAI Vijayawada project implementation unit director Vidyasagar said. He said tenders for the project are expected to be floated by the end of this month and the contract will be awarded shortly thereafter, paving the way for the commencement of works.
